A\u00a0<\/span>DNS\u00a0<\/span>hierarchy\u00a0<\/span>comprises\u00a0<\/span>of\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>top\u00a0<\/span>root-level\u00a0<\/span>domain,\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>top-level <\/span>below <\/span>followed\u00a0<\/span>by\u00a0<\/span>second-level\u00a0<\/span>domains, <\/span>and\u00a0<\/span>lastly\u00a0<\/span>subdomains.<\/span><\/p> Valid subdomains as described by RFC 1034 may contain any letter or number as well as the ‘-‘ (hyphen) but must begin with an alphabet character. While both upper and lower case characters are valid. Subdomains are case insensitive so ‘ABC.com’ is identical to ‘abc.COM’.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t The <\/span>length\u00a0<\/span>of\u00a0<\/span>a\u00a0<\/span>specific\u00a0<\/span>subdomain <\/span>label <\/span>is <\/span>limited <\/span>to\u00a0<\/span>63\u00a0<\/span>characters, <\/span>but <\/span>there <\/span>is\u00a0<\/span>an\u00a0<\/span>arbitrary <\/span>amount\u00a0<\/span>of\u00a0<\/span>subdomain\u00a0<\/span>labels\u00a0<\/span>in\u00a0<\/span>a\u00a0<\/span>domain\u00a0<\/span>name.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t Sub-Domain <\/span><\/strong>is <\/span>divided\u00a0<\/span>by\u00a0<\/span>dots.”\u00a0<\/span>“and\u00a0<\/span>read\u00a0<\/span>in\u00a0<\/span>descending\u00a0<\/span>specificities <\/span>from <\/span>left <\/span>to <\/span>right. <\/span>Each\u00a0<\/span>subdomain\u00a0<\/span>includes\u00a0<\/span>all\u00a0<\/span>prior\u00a0<\/span>subdomains\u00a0<\/span>and\u00a0<\/span>any\u00a0<\/span>subdomains\u00a0<\/span>that\u00a0<\/span>follow<\/span>. All subdomains are contained by the second-level domain, which is in turn contained by its top-level domain.<\/p> In this example the top-level domain is ‘tld’ and the second-level domain is ‘domain’.
